BCS Selection Weekend Part 1/3

bcs_logoSince everyone is talking about it and will continue to for the next month or so, I figured UED should have an opinion on the BCS bowls. Nothing too special this year and at least there weren’t any major snubs like we’ve seen in the past. That’s not good for the game of College Football because it gave the BCS a bit more legitimacy than it deserves. There are still a few problems this year, like three undefeated teams not even having a shot to play for the title, but overall it’s not as bad as it could have been. Probably going to be a bunch of boring games though, which is another reason for a playoff. So without more introduction:

Citi BCS National Championship Game: Texas (13-0) vs. Alabama (13-0)

This has the potential to be an interesting match-up, but will likely be a blow out. If the Big 12 championship game is an indicator of what Texas will look like on the big stage, then Alabama will roll on to an easy victory. After watching Alabama toy with Florida and heralded Tim Tebow, I really don’t see the Longhorns having any shot in this game. Yes Colt McCoy is a good quarterback, and yes Jordan Shipley has made some great plays, but I personally would have liked to see TCU get a shot at winning it all. This game will be a drubbing from the beginning with Mark Ingram showing why he won, or should win, the Heisman Trophy.

Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi: Oregon (10-2) vs. Ohio State (10-2)

Now this will definitely be a yawner as Oregon shows how far the powerhouse Big Ten has actually fallen. A lot of people will say how Ohio State has a good run defense that’s ranked in the top ten and that should help against Oregon’s triple threat of Masoli, James, and Blount. While that may be true, what I’m going to emphasize is that Oregon’s defense is actually where they will win the game. Everyone knows the Ducks can put up points, but preventing the Buckeyes from going score for score with them is what ultimately takes this game (Thanks John Madden for that insightful comment). If anyone has any doubt about who should win, check the teams two common opponents: Purdue and USC. Oregon crushed USC but had a couple issues with Purdue, while Ohio State lost to both. Seems pretty simple doesn’t it?
