NFL Coaches who SHOULD be unemployed, and the reasons they won’t be… part 3/4

The third part of our series continues with another embattled coach who has had a bit of success in his career. He fell into a great job where anyone with real football knowledge could have taken the Super Bowl with only a bit of effort. That coach of course is…
Norv Turner3. San Diego Chargers Head Coach: Norv Turner
After being gifted a 14-2 team the year before, Norv Turner barely got his team into the playoffs. He couldn’t win a game against a team with a winning record until week ten, and it took his Pro Bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson to call a players only meeting to get the team on track. The amount of talent on that Chargers team was ridiculous and matched by no one in the NFL, except maybe the undefeated Patriots. The difference between the two teams, to anyone who watched that game, was the coaching on each side. And seriously, Norv Turner could never match up to someone like Bill Belichick, and as we all know, coaching is what ultimately leads a team to victory. There’s also been a character issue on his team for awhile now, with Merriman, Cromartie, and Vincent Jackson each having their problems with the law. This could be conceived as something that’s out of his control, but I think a coach should be able to control his players and avoid these situations by creating a devotion to the team.

Turner has won the AFC West both years as a head coach and looks to be on his way to a third this year. However, the AFC West could quite possibly be the worst division in football, so that’s no difficult task. My good friend, who is a devoted Chargers fan, told me that he believes the team is playing really well right now and is winning some good games. He might have a point. So, if some of the fans are back on his side and the team ends up having a good year, then he definitely won’t be getting the axe any time soon. If he keeps taking the team to the playoffs each year and winning the division, I don’t think the ownership would have any real reason to get rid of him. Just like the Eagles and Andy Reid, people keep hoping that maybe Turner will be able to pull one out. Personally, I think just skating through isn’t quite good enough when you have one of the most talented teams in the country.

    12-3…

    but you still think this?

i guess the playoffs will determine it

Yeah, the Chargers really have taken off this year. One has to be impressed with their play throughout. In fact they’ve won four straight since I posted this, making it a ten game winning streak. However, the Chragers did fire Marty Schottenheimer who went 15-1 for not bringing home the big prize. The difference is that Norv Turner has won playoff games every year. We’ll see how he does in the crunch this year.
